Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) was one of the preeminent Spanish Baroque painters of his era. A court painter for King Philip IV, Velazquez was the shining star of the Spanish Golden Age. His breathtaking portraits still speak of his tremendous skill to audiences today. One of his most famous works was a royal family portrait from 1656, Las Meninas, a portrait possessing remarkable nuance, pulling the curtain back on the life of the royals. This film explores the man and his art and his large ambitions. In the centuries after his death, Velazquez's work has been a direct inspiration to artists as diverse as Goya, Monet, and Picasso. This is a must watch film for any lover of art and history!
