This video begins with an explanation of the earliest instruments, with a combination of keyboard and strings, that paved the way for the Bartolomeo Cristofori's invention of the piano in 1700. The piano's dynamic capabilities, ranging from the loudest fortissimo to the softest pianissimo, made it an expressive instrument that became the favored tool for composition. With the strength to stand alone, or as a perfect accompaniment for other instruments and voices, the piano attracted some of the greatest musical names in the world including Mozart and Schubert of centuries past as well as DeBussy and Scott Joplin of more recent times. This exploration will allow a greater appreciation of the cross-genre versatility of what some consider to be the greatest instrument of the western world.
