Purchasing an easel sight unseen is a challenge. From what I could gather from the scant amount of reviews online, the Rio Grande seemed to fit the bill. First, it came assembled upside down/backward to protect various components. It's intentional, as stated on the literature in the box. It took a couple minutes to figure out the proper orientation, but was rather easy to accomplish.
Next, the easel is a great fit for my in-home studio. It has a small footprint and is rather light and easy to move around. But make no mistake it is also sturdy. However, the main reason I purchased the Rio Grande is because of the middle tray. This is a separate tray that you can use to work on smaller panels. I generally paint on 9x12, 11x14, 12x16 panels/canvases, etc and this middle tray works great for these sizes. When I do use larger panels, the middle tray comes off the easel in seconds. Good design, and I love the flexibility it offers me to work in a wide range of panel/canvas sizes.
Shipping was fast, and Madison Art Shop had the best price on the internet. Would recommend not only for beginners, but for more advanced artists like myself who are looking for specific features in an easel.

The easel is very nice, but came in the box assembled upside down and backward. At first I thought it was a piece of junk, then I noticed one part was upside-down. After I fixed that I began to notice other parts which were backwards. Once I realized that whoever put it together and boxed it was intoxicated with some substance, I had the confidence to take it apart and start over--and I ended up with a very lovely, sturdy, practical, easel. Actually, the mystery of the assembly added a little character.

Great easel. Easy to assemble. Just the right size for home studio. Very sturdy and holds canvas securely. Love that it has a removable middle canvas tray for holding a small canvas. The rubber knobs keeps top and bottom of canvas from sitting directly on tray allowing to paint on entire canvas.

Great easel...well built and sturdy, while adjustable and compact for storage or transport.
