Product Description:

As advertising came of age in the 20th century, the new concepts were quickly applied to the marketing of books. Cover art became a major part of the way popular paperbacks were presented to the general public. For example, while the content remains the same, the covers used to sell Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four have seen a continual evolution of colors and style.

The modifications have served to fit changing consumer tastes and perceptions, with the focus being the motivation to purchase. Another example of such change is the more artistic presentation of A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The original design utilizes David Pelham’s now-iconic cog eye, making this cover as much modern art as commercial design. As with all aspects of the print industry, the traditional paperback is being replaced by digital media, ranging from the e-reader to other forms of storage and transmission to the end reader. This DVD serves to study the impact of technology on the paperback, the quintessential American form of story-telling. The DVD runs for 30 minutes and bears a 2011 copyright date.

Customer Reviews

As the paperback book democratized reading in the 20th century, cover art became a powerful marketing tool to sell books to the masses. The cover of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four changed over time, from its classic 1950s Penguin design to the latest artwork from Jon Gray, each iteration reflecting its respective decade's approach to selling the book to new readers. David Pelham's iconic 'cog eye' design for Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange transcended commercial design to become art in its own right. Today, the paperback and its cover have been replaced by the e-reader, with mass storage and electronic pages. As this new technology grows in popularity, the paperback book -- an important cultural entity for decades -- comes under new scrutiny. (30 minutes)
