Beauty: Dan Cruickshank’s Adventures in Architecture (Enhanced DVD)

Art historian and BBC television presenter Dan Cruickshank’s interest in the history of architecture gets a major boost in this program as he dabbles with the concept of beauty in architecture. He tries to conceive beauty in every facet starting with nature’s austerity and extending to excess decoration. Dan visits Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland where he tries to gain an insight into Inuit culture and creates an Igloo. He also journeys to Leshan located in China, which is renowned as the residence of the primitive Giant Buddha, the greatest construction of its kind.
The program also presents to the viewers Catherina Palace in Russia which stands as the epitome of Baroque architecture and the Sun Temple in Konarak located in the Indian state of Orissa which is famed for its authentic depiction of erotic statues. Dan completes his journey by visiting Albi Cathedral located in France. There is an interesting story associated with its construction. It was built to eliminate the local native population but it has now established itself as an object of spectacular beauty.
