Product Description:
Virtual Crime and the Future: Mapping Murder (Enhanced DVD) As the world becomes more tightly entwined with technology, criminals are finding it harder to stay in the shadows. Professor David Canter spends this part of Mapping Murder showing us how data mining is used to track down dangerous criminals through the web and across the globe. In the process we are introduced to some of the most malevolent felons in recent history.

Discover how a man who used harassing phone calls to drive women to hurt themselves was finally stopped through his own phone records. Later, we're introduced to the concept of geographical profiling, how it helped put a stop to the Mardi Gras Bomber, and how the same technique can be used to stop child pornography. Data mining even played a key role in finally apprehending Gary Ridgway, the infamous Green River Killer.

In this fast-paced high-tech world, data mining and detective work go hand in hand. The final part of the film discusses how law enforcement walks the delicate line between mapping crime and preserving civil liberties. This is one crime fighting tech that has a deep effect on us all, whether we're aware of it or not.

We are all visible in the 21st century, leaving a trail of online data, electronic records, pictures, and computer memories that highlight our life, according to criminologist David Center. He says, "Criminals who would've been hidden in the past are also becoming visible in this virtual world-provided we know how to look for them." Canter speaks about the use of data mining in order to track the movement of criminals throughout the world.

Case studies that are highlighted in the program include Simon Wadland of Northamptonshire who used his telephone to terrify women and convince them to mutilate themselves after claiming to have abducted their family members. His calls were so convincing that 11 women followed his twisted demands which included pushing needles through their genitals and setting fire to their pubic hair.

The case of Londoner Edgar Pearce is also described, the extortionist who was found through a large surveillance campaign. Gary Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer, is detailed in the program. He was convicted of murdering 49 girls and women in Washington State, and he was found with the assistance of the HITS crime database. This is a part of the series Mapping Murder: Investigative Psychology Meets Geographic Profiling. (23 minutes)
