Man and the Oceans: Tara Oceans (Enhanced DVD)
Customer Reviews
Humans are going through an immense growth in numbers that is unparalleled in history. The growth rate seems to stand outside of the laws of nature. What role do human beings play in decreasing the biodiversity of the planet and marine life? In this program, Tara Ocean researchers search the Indian Ocean to see the effect of human life on the seas.
They find copepods infected by viruses around the Austral Islands, which leads them to speculate about the role of viruses in ecological balance. They find fishing zones that have been overrun by jellyfish as well as areas with damaged coral, which is a troubling sign of rising ocean temperatures. (53 minutes)
Segments in this video include:
Exploring Marine Ecosystems – The Tara Oceans team is on a three year trip around the world to investigate the future of the planet. Ocean water is inhabited by plankton, and science is only familiar with 2% of it.
Ocean Biodiversity Under Threat – Tara Oceans has found thousands of new species of phytoplankton, new types of bacteria, and zoo plankton. Join the team as they go to the Indian Ocean to study how human life has affected marine ecosystems.
Surveying the Indian Ocean – The Tara Oceans team has been retrieving samples from up to 2,000 meters deep for weeks. They use nets with small filters to gather plankton. Christian Saude is a marine biologist who discusses copepods, the organism with the largest population in the oceans of the world.
Explosion of Marine Life – Copepods are the zoo plankton with the highest populations. They feed on algae. In the Indian Ocean there are several hotspots where phytoplankton blooms in large quantities and regenerates the local ecosystem.
