Civil unrest has plagued many countries in Africa, and Mozambique is no exception. The civil war in Mozambique, which began after it gained its independence from Portugal and continued until 1992, was between the ruling party, the Front for Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) and the Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO). Unfortunately, RENAMO is known for its mass abduction of children - forcing them to fight as child soldiers.
Julio Bombi is the 10 year old child abducted by RENAMO from a small village in Mozambique. Forced to raid villages like the one he grew up in, carry a gun, and shoot people he does not know, this story follows Julio's journey to reunite with his mother and takes a look at the implications of children who are taken from their families and trained to kill.
