Carolyn Jackson: Lads and Ladettes in School (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
How should educators handle students who drink, swear, and generally disrupt normal school activities? This is the question Carolyn Jackson tries to answer in this documentary. Known as “lad culture” in the UK, these students see school as a waste of time and adopt stereotypical over-masculine behaviors to offend their teachers and peers. Female students, called “ladettes”, also assume these roles in order to rile others.
Viewers will learn how “laddishness” can be linked to a student's fear of failure. If they do not try, then they don't have a chance to fail. This antisocial behavior can also be linked to feeling too pressured by parents and teachers. Dr. Jackson explores this unique coping strategy in depth, using interviews and questionnaires to reveal lad and ladette motivations.
Made in Australia, this film gives insight into a problem that many schools face across the world. We find out disciplining disruptive students isn't as easy as it seems. To get such kids interested in school again it will take ethical research and understanding why students behave the way they do in the the first place.
