The Lau of Malaita: Disappearing World (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
This documentary captures a particularly difficult time in the history of the Lau Malaita people (also known as the Kwaio people) of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The Lau Malaita live in what are known as "sea villages" in Langa Langa Lagoon. The sea villages are tiny hamlets built on stilts in the waters of the lagoon. This practice facilitates fishing, protects the Kwaio from raids by the inhabitants of the inland area, and helps them to avoid the mosquitos that live along the shore and other inland areas. The documentary explores the conflict between traditional, indigenous culture (including ancestor worship and dolphin hunting), and the presence of Christian missionaries. In the video, two priests commit ritual suicide in protest over the challenges presented by the modern world and the evolving belief system of their people.
