This revealing documentary charts the resurgence of Japan's militaristic past, following decades of economic prosperity and its largely passive political stance on the global stage. Despite the country's once proud tradition of armed protection and imperial conquest, modern Japan has come to represent a triumph of reflective Eastern culture blended with ambitious Western capitalism.
Stagnant growth levels since the late 90s have changed this, however, causing some Japanese to question their country's role in the world. Some even advocate a return to the more militaristic footing that characterized pre-war Japan, prompting concern that the country's shadowy nationalistic past could come back to haunt it. Though still a minority this program explains how right-wing trends towards military academies and revisionist history threaten the progressive foundation built by Japan in the decades since the country's darkest days.
