The biggest earthquake on the planet in 40 years created a deadly tsunami that killed over 300,000 people and swept across the Indian Ocean in December of 2004. Large communities were wiped out and millions were left homeless and hungry. The Indian Ocean tsunami left an unprecedented amount of destruction in its wake.
This program goes into details about why the 2004 tsunami happened and why its effects were so devastating. It uses scientific evidence, actual footage, computer graphics, and eyewitness accounts to give detailed information about the tsunami and provide an accurate analysis.
The program includes personal testimonies as a highlight and it discusses why some areas were more devastated than others. The question of whether or not the tragedy could have been prevented is discussed. (60 minutes)

Three Lives Joined by Disaster – Jut Putri filed her family as they were on vacation in Sumatra. They were enjoying their holiday near the city of Banda Aceh. Mark Heather, a hotel manager, had just recently opened a new hotel with a large party. Emma Squire spent the holidays on vacation with her family in Sri Lanka. Their stories are highlighted in this segment.
The Elephants Felt it First – An elephant herd in the hills in Thailand became agitated on the morning of December 26th, and the story is discussed by an elephant keeper.
Indian Ocean Subduction Zone – The geological plate that carries the continent of India was thrust under the plate that carries South East Asia. This created major stresses that resulted in the earthquake and the tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004.
