In the search for the perfect learning atmosphere and the perfect student, today's educational systems have run amuck with their zero tolerance policies which create worse problems than the ones they were intended to end. Viewers are exposed to the prison-like atmosphere of the traditional school building. From a heightened police presence to drug searches to hostile policies that assume guilt, schools have begun processing students like factory products. In doing so, they have undermined the physical and mental health of entire generations with each generation facing more intensive processing than the one before.
The evidence? An elementary aged student is arrested for theft when they steal two dollars from another classmate. Another child is suspended for making the shape of a gun out of their food, and yet another is suspended for weapons violations because her key chain meets the school's definition of a weapon. Students feel trapped by policies originally meant to keep them safe. Parents aren't involved enough to recognize the signs of student trauma or to question policies they don't even know exist.
How did we get to this point? The War on Kids DVD illustrates the situations that lead to panicked thinking patterns and the consequences of them. This is a must see for those who want to know more about their schools and the effects of our educational system upon individuals, families, and the nation.
