Fake shoes, perfume, cologne, and other goods – these are sold in the counterfeiting business. It is the largest illicit industry in the world, and it brings in hundreds of billions of dollars for those involved. The business also funds organized crime while draining the economy and putting the lives of many at risk. This CNBC program highlights a global crime industry in which fake products are produced and sold in a high reward high risk world.
The difficulties involved with port inspections are shown. Viewers get to see how an LAPD anti-counterfeiting unit performs a raid and get glimpses of makeshift factories where counterfeit items are forged. A company that had its entire brand copied is profiled along with a defense contractor who made counterfeit parts that eventually made their way all the way to a weapons depot in Iraq. Reason for Counterfeit Boom – Just about any product that can be purchased can be made counterfeit, all the way from clothing, to shoes, to medicine and military equipment. The global economy, manufacturing overseas, and the internet have created an environment where counterfeiting has started to grow.
Health and Safety Risks – Counterfeiting takes money from several different parts of the economy, and people lose jobs as an end result of it. Most counterfeited products are produced in China. Fake products can come with serious safety risks.
