Dreams and Nightmares: Memory and the Spirit World in Australia's Indigenous Art (Enhanced DVD)(Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
For the indigenous Aboriginal people, the term “dreaming” implies the creation of an age in which the land was shaped by the ancient ancestral spirits. But in the face of the brutal results of the colonization we are faced with one question-Is the power of dreams, collective memory and the spirit world equal? In this program, viewers encounter Australian artists whose works comprise of one level or another, the ancient Dreamtime and its replica. Here curator Hetti Perkins interacts with architect Lin Onus, whose fruit bat installation at the Art Gallery of NSW develops a type of phenomenon known as “suburban dreaming” and Yvonne Koolmatrie, renowned for inventive forms influenced by the eel traps of the Riverland and Coorong areas. Past, present, and future also combine together in the works of Tiwi Islands artist Pedro Wonaeamirri , who has been inspired from tutini funeral poles, and Adelaide-based Brena L.Croft, keeper of the fascinating 1950s slides depicting her father adopting to a white society. Numerous other talented artists come and discuss their work.
