Empire of Evil? An Inside Look at Iranian Society (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
The Western World has a very specific view of Iran. This program explores the causes for these opinions such as the "Axis of Evil" speech given by president George W. Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's, Iran's president, very public, very anti-American agenda. In addition, viewers get a personal, real view of everyday life in Iran through the lives of five very different Iranians, two women, two men, and a young girl. Viewers are invited into a variety of everyday situations to see and hear how typical Iranians live. Much of the program focuses on the struggle of women in this decidedly patriarchal society. For example, women are allowed to participate in sporting activities but are not given equal money or facilities for training and are not allowed to compete outside of Iran, crushing Olympic and international competition dreams for these talented athletes. Also, several Iranian women of varying ages gather to discuss the roles and rules they must adhere to throughout their lives. In addition, issues of anti-US propaganda, the educational system in Iran, the importance of religion in this theocratic state, the impact of the Western World on Iranian society, and family dynamics are addressed. Through exploring the everyday lives of these five very different individuals viewers get a well-rounded view of what life is really like in this closed, highly religious state. Not available in French-speaking Canada. (91 minutes)
