There are steps young teens go through during their latter years of high school. Teachers should be enlightened on these phases to help students cope with being independent. This is time for teachers to listen more to students ready to talk about their lives, friends and family. As an active listener teachers help these students become more confident in their thinking and choices that affect their lives. Teachers are allowing and respecting students feelings and choices. This is necessary for adolescents to mature and prepare to make decisions for themselves.
As a teacher their are limits to confidentiality with students, but teachers still have a huge presence in students lives and can be very impactful. It is important for teachers to remain open and neutral while showing genuine compassion for the student. Again, this is a fine line where counseling skills help keep the relationship between student and teacher balance. If student shows signs of inward or outward reckless behavior teachers must seek additional professional support.
Crossing over into adulthood is an exciting and scary time for students and teachers can use basic counseling skills to help them make the transition as painless as possible.
