Heart of Darfur: Fighting an International Humanitarian Crisis (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
Darfur, the name alone strikes images of horror and terror that most of the world knows nothing about. Years after the Darfur Peace Agreement was signed it lies in ruins, with rebels still running rampant and killing and burning at will. This Wide Angle documentary ventures into the heart of the conflict, following the UN leader, Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, and the UN peacekeepers, attacked and demoralized themselves, as they attempt to reestablish peace in this volatile area of the world by convincing the rebel groups to sit at the bargaining table. These diplomatic attempts are made all while attempting to protect the innocent citizens and aid workers who are so often targeted. In addition, the desperation of every day life is seen in the Abu Shouk refugee camp where so many of Sudan's citizens have been forced to go after being displaced by their own countrymen. This is made all the more real through interviews with the refugees who now call Abu Shouk home. Finally, listen as Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning NY Times columnist, discusses his thoughts on the future conflict coming to Sudan. It was Kristof's writings that first brought light to the terror and genocide occuring in Darfur. International influences, especially China's involvement, are also explored. May not be suitable for younger viewers. Original broadcast title: Heart of Darfur. (57 minutes)
